One of the more rapidly growing cities along the Aegean Sea’s central coast
in Turkey is the city of Izmir. It is also becoming one of the Aegean’s most
popular tourist destinations with lots of quality hotels,
hostels, apartments and holiday villas. Historically, the region is estimated to have
been originally settled between 7,000 and 4,000 BC according to
archaeological excavations and artifacts unearthed in the region. The
Central Anatolian Hittite Empire became the ruling entity around 1,500 BC
and there were a number of locations in and around Izmir mentioned in past
historical writings.
The first settlement
recorded was atop Mount Yamanlar which is situated north and east of the
inner gulf. This later settlement was considered the core of what was once
called “Old Smyrna” (later Izmir). During the 13th century BC, the Balkans
invaded, destroying Troy as well as central and western Anatolia. It was at
this time that we witnessed the collapse of the Bronze Age and the period is
often referred to as the Dark Ages of Anatolia and Greece.
