History
of Dikili dates back to 4000-5000 BC. In the scope of the historical
records, lands of Dikili have hosted numerous civilizations from the first
ages to the present depending on its unique characteristics i.e. very
productive soil, deep blue sea, clean and long beaches...
The region is known as Mysia, along with the history, initially has shown
the tracks of civilizations belonging to the tribes such as Luwiler, Leleg
of Helens and Peselag.
Dikili has
become the hometown of Lydians, Persians, Phrygians, Romans and Pergamonians
in the past history. Many cities belonging to different civilizations of the
ancient ages have found around Dikili as well.
Atarneus is one of the most developed one of these ancient cities in Dikili.
Aristotle also have lived in Atarneus too. Furthermore, Dikili have hosted
Byzantines, Genoeses, Seljuks and Ottomans in the middle ages.
Dikili was one the villages of the district Bergama in 1860. Dikili has
become a district of Izmir in October 13th, 1928. |

Ancient Cities
According to the archeological digs and works, many civilizations have
settled on the lands of Dikili. Atarneus, Pytany, Teuthrania, Malea,
Attaia, Elaia, Kanai, Karina and Aigai are some of those
civilizations that are found in and around Dikili lands.
ATARNEUS - Atarneus Hill
Atarneus is the ost famous of the ancient cities in Dikili.
The first city which was built in B.C. 4000 by the Acadians
in the center of Agilkale that is situated close to Dikili,
took the name of "Atarneus" which means "mother goddess &
holy source".

ARISTOTLE
Aristotle; known as
the most genius of the classical philosophy, wrote some of his works that
have become the basis of the philosophy nearly 2400 years ago in Atarneus,
today known as Aristotelian Hill.
In B.C. 367, Aristotle, who was taken from his home Thrace-Stagyre by the
family friend Proksen and brought to Atarneus, married with Pythias, the
niece of Atarneus King Hermias and gave his lectures here. After the King
Hermias fell from his throne, Aristotle left Atarneus and went to the
Macedonian Palace for becoming the tutor of Alexander |

PYTANY (CASTLE OF
ÇANDARLI)
One of the historical heritages of Dikili is the castle of Pytany that is
located at the nearby town Candarli. Glorious Pytany Castle, currently known
as Candarli Castle, was built in the 13th century and restored by the Turks
is one of the best preserved castles in Turkey.
According to the legend, Amazon woman warriors dominated the district and
became the founders of the many coast cities. Pytany, meaning "The City of
Women" has come from this legend |
